Cleanup event against marine litter
West Melbourne VIC
Every year 8 million metric tons of plastic gets into our oceans, affecting marine life and ecosystems. As they say, if this doesn’t change, by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the sea. We are hugely concerned about this, as, without a healthy marine environment, the seafood industry would be negatively impacted. And that is why we want to do our part.
This past 26th of February 2020, our market staff joined Clean Up Australia Day. In about 1 hour, our amazing team collected over 21kgs of litter from the roads next to our market. They recognised which were the most common littering elements present while enjoying a team bonding activity.
Through this type of event we want to educate our staff, create behaviour change, and raise awareness about the impacts of litter on our environment while enjoying time outdoors. We will be sharing our knowledge about the relationship of litter and marine pollution, what are the most frequent waste streams polluting our area, and how a simple action can create a positive impact for the community.
